Polystyrene - A Smart, Sustainable Solution

With growing concern about the sustainable exploitation of our resources, preservation of our environment and the need to reduce our carbon emissions to reverse the effects of climate change, RitePak strives to educate the public about polystyrene and itís global impact..

Expanded Polystyrene is increasingly recognized as environmentally preferable for its low carbon footprint and its 100% recyclable nature. We also ensure that our manufacturing processes are environmentally friendly and energy-efficient.

Energy Reduction

A Polystyrene based product require about 50% less energy to produce than a similar coated paperboard cup with a corrugated cup sleeve. Reduced energy consumption is an established way to slow global warming.

Resource conservation

Polystyrene also helps reduce greenhouse gases and lower our carbon footprint. Foam polystyrene products weigh between two and five times less than comparable paper packaging products. This translates to a reduced carbon footprint with fewer air emissions, as well as less gasoline consumption when transporting products.

Using polystyrene foodservice packaging instead of reusable products conserves water and energy required to clean these reusable products. One average weight polystyrene foam cup produces significantly less greenhouse gas emissions than two average weight coated paperboard cups or one average weight coated paperboard cup with a sleeve.

Recycling Polystyrene

RitePak will institute programs to reclaim polystyrene which is a valuable resource for production of new products. Most single-use, coated paperboard foodservice packaging materials are not recycled because the coating and paper cannot be separated economically.

The program will offer bins to collect polystyrene products for recycling. The bins will be located at strategic points throughout business centres and residential neighbourhoods.

Recycling helps promote energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve resources.

Designed with Food Safety in Mind

The food safety benefits of polystyrene foodservice packaging are undisputed. The anti-bacterial properties that polystyrene foodservice products offer can help in providing sanitary foodservice and preventing the spread of disease. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that regulates the safety of food-contact packaging, has approved the use of polystyrene since 1958.
